Since summer is quickly approaching, a lot of people are eager to get into shape, but the question is, how does one begin the process of starting a workout regime?
I spoke to Tom Scull,
a registered personal trainer, and he gave me some simple but important steps
about how to begin a regular workout program.

Step # 1 – Check with
your Doctor
Any reputable personal
trainer will tell you that it is always important to check with your physician
before starting an exercise program. Most people will be encouraged by their
health professional to become more active. It is, however, important to check
with your doctor to make sure there will be no health complications once you
begin.
Step # 2 – Set a Goal
It is important that
when you begin your regime, you have a goal in mind. This can be anything. You
may want to gain muscle mass, train for a particular sport or simply loose weight.
Whatever the reason is, it is important that you have clear goals in mind.
Step # 3 – Evaluate
Your Physical Condition and Nutritional Habits
This is step is vital!
If you do not evaluate your current condition you will not have anything to
measure against later. You can measure your current physical condition by
completing a body mass index or a waist/hip ratio. It is also important to adjust your
diet if necessary. Look at the number of calories you should be consuming each
day based on your body type and your intake of good fats and bad fats. Tom says
“The key to a healthy lifestyle is the combination of both healthy eating
habits and consistent exercise." He goes on to say “following the Canada Food Guide is the best way to maintain a
well-rounded diet”.
Later in the week, Tom will tell us how to design a program and how to make sure the program is right for you!
