Canadian Music Stop - Junior Boys

With so many sounds and music influences out there, I just had to turn to our Twitter friends for their expertise on great up-and-coming Canadian bands. The response from our Twitter followers was great, but the band that stood out was a suggestion made by our music savvy friend Consuelo @cbernardi. Meet Canadian band Junior Boys.

Junior Boys

Formed in 1999, the duo of Jeremy Greenspan and Matthew Didemus, professionally known as Junior Boys, are a Hamilton native band. Junior Boys draw influences from electro, pop, techno and hip-hop, which combined make an awesome sound to dance or just relax to.

Although the band has been around for some time, their critical success came in 2004 with their album 'Last Exit'  followed by 'So This is Goodbye' in 2006. Their recently released album, their third one in their music career, 'Begone Dull Care',  has been regarded as exceptional, and it's not hard to see why.

Their sound isn't the typical techno/pop sound. I would it describe the Junior Boys' sound as a precise combination of edgy electro beats, great lyrics, and contrasting soft, chill-out vocals. "Hazel," the lead single from their latest album, is one of those catchy songs that you can't stop listening to.

Check out this and other Junior Boys hits on their MySpace or visit their official website to learn more about this highly-recommended band.

Summer Fashion Accessory: The Wristlet

As much as we love large roomy bags with tons of space for our countless purse items, we felt it was time to mix things up a bit and feature a great alternative to over sized bags.

A wristlet is a fantastic accessory to own because it's small, practical, and cute. Instead of hauling around a huge purse all day and endlessly rummaging through your bag to find your lip gloss, the wristlet provides easy access to your essentials.

Medium Pleated Wristlet

We think that the Medium Pleated Wristlet is the perfect accessory for those carefree, spontaneous summer nights.  It's big enough to store your keys, cash, phone, and lip gloss, but small enough that you can carry it around on your wrist or slip it in your pocket. So if you're heading out last minute with a friend for ice cream, or going to the beach you won't be held down with a big heavy bag. The wristlet comes in classic black, red, and magenta (shown in photo). The pretty pleats add a bit of feminine flair to any outfit, and would look adorable with a sundress or flirty summer skirt and tank!

Working in the Summer Sun: How to Stay Protected

Outdoor Workers

Many office workers stare out their windows in the summer time watching the outdoor workers with envy. While they are stuck at their desks all day, landscapers, parks and recreation employees, and constructions workers are all enjoying the summer sun.

Unfortunately there is a misconception that working outside and breathing fresh air is always good for you.

There are many hazards and discomforts when it comes to working outside in the hot summer months. One source of danger is the sun. As much as we love to show off our tans, unfortunately our skin can get severely damaged by the sun. Too much sun exposure can result in skin cancer and wrinkles.

A Landscaper

A second hazard is the unhealthy air that contains high levels of ozone and particle pollution. Exposure to these pollutions has been linked to asthma and other respiratory illnesses, and a shortened life expectancy. Too much outdoor work can result in heat stress, being struck by lightening and tick or mosquito bites that may lead to West Nile virus.

So if you are someone who works outside or know someone who does, make sure to be safe and:

  • Wear sunblock, sunglasses, and a sun hat
  • Drink plenty of water or sport drinks
  • Seek shade if you are feeling dizzy

Remember to speak up if you're not feeling well and need a break. Even with these summer hazards, many outdoor workers love working outside and couldn't even dream of working indoors during the summer months!
